South Australia police have dismantled a significant cannabis operation discovered inside a warehouse in the inner-north Adelaide suburb of Brompton.
Detectives from the Western District CIB carried out a raid on the warehouse at 11.30 am on Saturday, the 3rd of July, 2021. Inside the building, police located 150 kilograms of wet cannabis material and 100 kilograms of dried cannabis. While it’s difficult to value the wet cannabis material, the dried cannabis is worth over $1 million in Adelaide’s black market.
According to police, the warehouse was being used to grow and process cannabis in a “large hydroponic cannabis set up.”
Police have arrested two men in connection with the Brompton warehouse crop. This includes a 25-year-old man from West Richmond who was found inside the warehouse on the day of the raids and a 32-year-old man from Woodville South. The Woodville South man was arrested on Monday after further investigations by the police.
Both men have been charged with cultivating a commercial quantity of a controlled plant, trafficking a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug and possessing prescribed equipment.
The 25-year-old was denied bail when he appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court earlier this week. He is expected back in court on the 3rd of November, 2021. The 32-year-old was granted bail and will face the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on the 5th of August, 2021.
While the Brompton warehouse raid will have prevented hundreds of kilograms of cannabis from entering the state’s black market, cannabis consumption is still increasing state-wide. According to the National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program, South Australians consume over 15,000 mg of THC per 1,000 people per day.
